Puffy eyes

The skin around the eye is the thinnest on the body, so it shows everything first — fluid, salt, short nights, allergies — and loudest in the mirror at 7am.

What is actually going on

Overnight, lying flat lets fluid settle where the skin is loosest, which is exactly the area under the eye. A salty dinner, alcohol or an allergy that flares at night all add to the pool, and the first hour upright is what drains it.

Puffiness that has not settled by mid-morning, day after day, is worth a conversation rather than another eye cream — allergies, sleep and a few medical causes can sit behind it, and the right next step depends on which.

What helps at home

  • A cool compress while the kettle boils

  • An extra pillow, so the fluid has somewhere to go

  • Less salt and alcohol in the evening

  • Still there by lunch, most days? Mention it to your GP

Talk it through first

A consultation is a conversation, not a commitment. Tell us what you are seeing and we will suggest the right next step — even when that step is not a treatment.
